An interesting article. I have a couple of questions/points…
1) You don’t explain the formula you use for the overwhelming forces bonus.
2) The morale check seems very harsh for a pulp setting. Anything requiring 3+ successes is going to be very difficult and it seems that certain forces (police, military etc) should get a bonus due to their training and discipline (as should fanatics etc).
I give a bonus to whichever side has 2X or more the other. I missed putting it in, as my daughter will NOT let up this afternoon, so I got distracted several times working on this.
I agree the morale might be too difficult. Another option might be half the number of chips lost.
With regards to morale I was also thinking half the number would be a better idea, with a possible bonus for disciplined/fanatical forces. Even with a bonus, as the number of losses rises, the morale roll will become increasingly difficult.
Another option re: leadership/warfare is to consider Teamwork and/or Synergy. These should certainly make a big difference in mass combat to reflect some of the truly great leaders throughout history.
I know the idea was for a fast and simple system, which you’ve achieved quite successfully, but there’s no harm in expanding some of the ideas a little further 🙂
