Dr. Ferenc Szasz, fixture here at the University of New Mexico, a mentor and friend, and member of my dissertation committee passed away this weekend of leukemia. He was a gentleman — kind, generous, and patient — and he will be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Connell-Szasz and his daughter — both teaching at UNM, as well. I wish them the best.

My condolences on the loss of Dr. Szasz. I hope that in the days and weeks to come, the good memories sustain you and enable you to sustain those closest to him as his absence makes itself felt.

Thanks, sir! It’s a blow, as this is the second person I’ve worked with that’s died — Dr. Tim Moy died in 2007 trying to save his son from a riptide in Hawaii. Right now, I’m having to redirect my efforts to reform a dissertation committee, so this doesn’t — yet again — slow down my program.
I know that sounds cold, but I’ve spent the last year or so pulling myself back together from a series of layoffs, nearly failing to pass my comps (due to working full time while doing a doctorate full-time), other personal issues, and physical illness. The last month or so, I’ve finally begun to get some traction back…
