New Treatment for Alzheimers
Posted by blackcampbell under Health Care, Technology | Tags: alzheimers, gammagard |Leave a Comment
My father had Alzheimers and died of it. It’s a terrifying, hateful disease that slowly destroys the personality of the victim, rolling back your memories over time until you no longer know the people and events going on around you. I will admit a certain fear of this illness, as someone who has worked hard most of him life to train his mind.
Baxter has a new treatment for Alzheimers that has just cleared Phase II clinical trials: Gammagard. Aricept (Pfizer) has been on the market for a while and shows some signs of slowing the progression of the disease, but initial investigations for Gammagard look to not only stop the progression, but occasionally reverse the effects of memory loss.
Here’s hoping the drug works. With an aging population (30 million are thought to have some stage of Alzheimers), combating dementia is a burgeoning need.

Cyberwar

Former DNI Michael McConnell, and owner of Booz Allen Hamilton, recently testified that the United States is under cyberattack, and we have to do something about right now! The military has agreed with the idea, and now McConnell’s BAH is getting $34 million to build the Pentagon a way-cool cyberwar command center.
Convenient, ain’t it?

Internet Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

It certainly deserves it more than Obama… CNN has a bit on this.
The internet is, in my opinion, one of the most democratizing, freeing technologies to come along since the printing press. It allows the instantaneous sharing of ideas and opinions, with all that entails (good and bad.) It allows people to reconnect and communicate over great distances cheaply — I’ve started talking to relatives I haven’t seen in decades. It’s spurred me to head home in August to see them. The internet allows access to information like no technology has, and has completely changed the nature of business — for the better, I believe. (But that might just be because of the smoking deal I got on the Hilton Grosvenor in Edinburgh for my visit to Scotland. Thank you, William Shatner!)
Most people in my field, history, are antiquarian by nature and practice. However, I feel that the technological progress that we are seeing, and the synergy that is being created between computing, portable communications devices, and informatics is leading us toward a better, more stable, and ultimately happier (well…maybe more spoiled) existence.
Thanks, internet!

Inventor Doug Hines relates who Roxxy was developed…and it’s not for the prurient interests one would think. John Stossel weighs in on how consumer protection laws blocked the original purpose of the robot, to act as a companion for the elderly.

James Cameron Opines on the Future of NASA
Posted by blackcampbell under Science Fiction, Technology[2] Comments
The main problem with NASA is the incredible amount of administrative waste and abuse, coupled with an institutional mindset that is highly risk-adversive…not the right attitude when shooting your ass into space. NASA has been a relic of the Cold War and Jet Age for some time, and has needed to be trimmed and focused on the future of space travel. that means not building yet another space truck like the Space Shuttle.
There needs to be closer ties with commercial space exploration, and more support for the private sector to jump in on the space race. This means less regulation of the space industry by the FAA. This means a concentration on the real explorers of the next half century: robots.
It’s time to stop pussy-footing around in low orbit and shoot for Mars with robotic explorers that are capable of setting up the habitats necessary for an eventual manned mission.
Most of the complaints about cutting NASA’s budget come from people who still view space as a means to national pride. The benefits in glory do not outweigh the cost with government in charge. There is the argument about the Chinese and Russians holding the “high ground”, but most of the military space applications are handled by the US Air Force; I don’t see their budget getting chopped badly.
It’s time to start working toward a viable exploitation of space. That can only happen when the bureaucrats are out of the way and there’s a profit to be made.

They don’t really say what they’re building, but the gist seems to be some kind of biological weapon. Great idea…

A New Airship for a New Millenium?
Posted by blackcampbell under General Ramblings, Technology1 Comment
Anyone who knows me, knows I am fascinated by airships, and the whole industry and culture of these majestic craft. There have been several attempts to revive the dirigible — from Luftschiffbau Zeppelin’s new N-07 (curently flying in Germany and California with Venture Airships) to this new design by Seymourpowell out of London…
Absolutely beautiful concept!
